Designed for: Experienced Class A CDL drivers selected to mentor, guide, and train recent CDL graduates and new hires as they transition into the carrier’s workforce.
Driver Trainers are more than experienced drivers—they are the first line of leadership a new driver encounters. Success in this role requires not only advanced driving skill but also patience, communication, professionalism, and the ability to model safety and accountability in every situation.
At Star Behaviors, we strongly recommend that all Driver Trainer candidates first complete the Class A CDL Truck Driver Assessment to ensure they possess the behavioral foundation of a professional driver. For those chosen to serve as trainers, the Driver Trainer Assessment then evaluates the additional traits and behaviors necessary to teach, coach, and lead new drivers effectively.
This assessment focuses on qualities such as patience, fairness, empathy, consistency, and professionalism—combined with the ability to influence, motivate, and instill safe habits. These are the characteristics that separate a strong driver from a true mentor.
Why it matters:
Carriers that place unqualified drivers into training roles risk
more than poor instruction—they risk accidents, compliance
violations, frustrated trainees, and higher turnover.
Identifying the right Driver Trainers ensures that new drivers
gain the skills, confidence, and trust they need to succeed. A
strong training program led by the right people reduces risk,
improves retention, and builds a safer, more professional fleet.
